Official: 3 dead in scaffolding collapse in downtown Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ An emergency official says a section of scaffolding collapsed at a high-rise construction project in downtown Raleigh, killing three people and sending another to a hospital.

Jeffrey Hammerstein, the district chief at Wake County EMS, says three people are confirmed dead in Monday’s accident. Another was taken to a hospital in Raleigh.

State Department of Labor spokesman Neal O’Briant said Monday that his agency is investigating what caused a section of movable scaffolding to peel away from an 11-story building and crash into a parking lot below.

Police and fire officials have closed off a wide area around the glass and steel building.
